On Sunday 19 May Colne Yacht Club, based in Brightlingsea, will be offering try sailing sessions to members of the public from 10.30am-16.00pm.

Jane Long from the Club said: “Ever thought about learning to sail but never quite found the time? Now’s your chance! On Sunday 19 May you can go down to Colne Yacht Club in Brightlingsea, when Colne Yacht will be running a “Push The Boat Out” day to encourage people to get on the water. From 10.30 the Club will offer half hour sessions in the Club’s fleet of Sonata keelboats. These are small, stable, yet lively yachts that are ideal for learning to sail, particularly for adults. You will be provided with life jackets, and you are asked to come suitably dressed with soft soled shoes and some weatherproof clothes.”

The Club also provides great opportunities to continue sailing, with plenty of activity available to prospective new sailors – offering training with qualified instructors. The Club has a very full racing and cruising programme and actively encourages all new members to get involved. Friday evenings are a great club night and there are often social suppers and evening talks in the winter, with racing in the summer.

If this sounds like the sort of club you’d like to take part in, then get in touch with the Colne Yacht Club and book a session on Sunday 19 May, telephone 01206 302594, or email waterside@colneyachtclub.org.uk.

RYA Programmes Manager, Michelle Gent, commented: “We are delighted that for the second year running, Push the Boat Out will be returning for the whole of May. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned sailor looking for a way back in to the sport, there will be something for everyone - find out what’s going on in your local area and get involved."

The national participation campaign run by the RYA aims to make the water more accessible whatever your age, background or ability - getting more people sailing, windsurfing, having fun and getting active outdoors.

All safety equipment is provided, so just bring a pair of old trainers you don’t mind getting wet and your sense of fun. Refreshments will be also be available at many venues, with a host of shore-side activities and entertainment to enjoy too.

Last year, more than 39,000 people across the UK attended a PTBO open day, inspiring thousands of new sailors to join their local club.
