Over the weekend just under 40 sailors took part in the
first ever Welsh e-sailing championships. The racing was run using Virtual
Regatta and sailors were in touch with each other through zoom.
Fleets included a RS Terra, Optimist, Topper, and a General
Handicap/ Coach/ Parent Fleet.
Sarah McGovern, RYA Cymru Wales Performance Manager and
Event Director said: "It was
great to see so many sailors taking part in the e-racing. Though we couldn't
run the Welsh Youth & Junior Championships we were still able to provide
the opportunity for sailors to practice their strategy and tactics and to
interact with other sailors over Zoom. We are also able to offer racing to
Parents and Coaches who would normally we volunteering or working at the event.
Thank you to Jonny McGovern for helping run some of the racing. Hopefully we
can get back on the water for some sailing and racing soon!"
“Sport has a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals.
E-Sailing has enabled the boating community to keep in touch with their friends
and fellow club members during the lockdown restrictions. In May we held the
e-sailing spring club championships, several CYRCs have been run through virtual
regatta and now we’ve had a successful Welsh Youth and Junior Championships, I’m
looking forward to seeing more e-sailing take place as well as the return of actual
boating! Well done to all of the competitors and thank you to Sarah and the
events team for organising” concluded Gerwyn Owen, RYA Cymru Wales CEO."
