Case Studies

Below are just a few of the many success stories from clubs or centres that have seen their numbers grow and their OnBoard sessions thrive as a result of the OnBoard programme:

Rudyard Lake SC, North West - Patricia Ordsmith (President and RYA Senior Instructor)

“Targeting mums who home school their children has brought an influx of kids into OnBoard. The mums group will enjoy weekly three-hour learn to sail sessions, including basic powerboat skills, at the same time their children are doing OnBoard sailing. By offering the mums a new daytime activity, they get a bit of ‘me’ time while sharing a new experience with their children, who can progress into our OnBoard club.”

Shropshire SC, Midlands - John Ridgers (Training Principal)

“Since launching OnBoard in 2015, the club has become much more visible to the local community and there is a real groundswell of youngsters and their families around the club. It has also helped us access funding through our County Sports Partnership. Now we are offering club youth membership at the start of OnBoard to encourage students from our partner academy schools to use the club on top of their weekly sessions.”

Swanage SC, South West -  Mike Cemm (Chief Instructor)

“OnBoard is a breath of fresh air; it increases membership and changes the demographics. We have seen a marked increase in family membership from being OnBoard, with far more active sailors and volunteers. We’ve also had quite a few parents and teachers want to join in adult training, and they often go out in safety boats and take photos to go back to school and encourage the other youngsters to try sailing.”
