Case Studies - Young People

There are so many reasons why young people of all ages love being OnBoard. Here you will find just a few examples of these and the benefits that being on the water has brought those young people taking part.

Performer
Heather, Age 20 (Otley SC & Clipper Round The World Race crew)
“OnBoard definitely had an impact on my ambitions. It enabled me to experience sailing with my peers in a safe and fun environment and to develop my sailing at my own pace. The thing I love most about sailing is the calmness that washes over you when you are focused on making the boat go as fast as possible. This is the same whether I’m sailing my Laser back at Otley or on a 70ft racing yacht in the Pacific.”

Determination
Dai, Age 22
“Sailing has grown me into the young man I am. After my parents divorced, I felt lost and abandoned. But encouraged by my mum and club I became an Assistant Dinghy Instructor. Training overtook my life and became my passion. I qualified as a Senior Instructor at 19, but then serious illness struck. Yet with my club and family’s support I’ve managed to continue sailing and training the next generation.”

Team player
Nicola, Age 17 (Debdale Outdoor Activity Centre & 2016 Manchester Sports Awards Young Volunteer of the Year)
“I used to think sailing looked boring, but that's mostly because I was scared! After a slow nerve racking start, I built my confidence. Volunteering at Debdale has really changed who I am and brought me out of my shell. It has taught me to be more confident personally, and a bit more daring. Sailing and windsurfing rely on not just strength but mind power and most of all teamwork."

Confidence
Sam Hannaford, Age 18 (Horizons Plymouth & now doing a four-year apprenticeship with Princess Yachts
“Coming from nothing to where I am now is a huge step. I’ve grown in confidence and have skills I can use inside and outside watersports, thanks to the support from Horizons that helped me reach my goals, aims and aspirations. It’s being out on the water I love, being able to work with what you’ve been a part of building. The sense of pride really makes the job worthwhile.”

Independence
Krishan Bhogal, Age 15 (Manor Park SC & OnBoard/JMST recipient 2013)
"I’ve always been a determined character but through sailing I’ve become even more committed and organised. I travel to train and compete at weekends so have to plan my schoolwork, schedule and fitness goals as well as organise and look after my boat and kit. I feel very confident talking to adults through communicating with my coaches and I cope better with pressured situations in the rest of my life too."
