The Boat

49erFX - Women's Skiff

Rio 2016 will be the 49erFX's Olympic debut, the 49erFX has the same hull as the 49er (Men's skiff) but slightly smaller rig making it easier to handle for the women. The 49erFX is a double handed twin trapeze skiff type sailing dinghy with a large sail area (consisting of mainsail, jib and asymmetric). All the women have been on a large learning curve over the past Olympic cycle to learn to balance and manage this boat that can get up to 25 knots in very windy conditions. The boat requires boat members of the crew to be athletic and agile, to keep up with the boat the crew spend a lot of a team in the gym to make rapid and balancing movements.

The helm makes most of the tactical decisions while the crew controls the speed of the boat with the sails.
