May was certainly a busy month on the water in the East Region, with plenty going on and lots to look forward to later in the season.
PTBO Round Up & Survey
As May has drawn to a close it also saw the end of the RYA Push the Boat Out Initiative for 2019. In the East we saw 56 clubs and centres participate, with almost 60 events – the most we have ever had in the Region - and thousands of people getting on the water. Initial reports are very encouraging and suggest that events were popular (despite some very challenging weather!), with better conversion rates to club members than in previous years. We’ve also seen some fantastic reports and photographs from events – please do keep these going! Now is a really great time to be following up with attendees from the day if you have not done so already – did they join the club? If so, how will you integrate them into club life? If they haven’t joined yet, encourage them to think about it – How was their experience? The clubs that took part will also have received a post-event Push the Boat Out Survey from Michelle Gent – if you have not filled this in yet, please do complete this when you have the opportunity.
There are some exciting developments regarding the RYA’s OnBoard programme, with the opportunity for East Region OnBoard Clubs to host an Instructor Support Day. These days involve an RYA Coach Assessor coming to your OnBoard Club, for free, to work with your instructors, and are aimed at inspiring and informing your OnBoard Instructors in using the latest innovations in the delivery of OnBoard sessions to motivate your young sailors. The interactive day will cover activities both on and off the water, including:
- How to make the most of the latest OnBoard character attributes and resources
- Find out how we can sell sailing as more than just a sport
- Leave armed with fresh and new delivery ideas.

Race Coach Level 2 Courses
If your Club would be keen to host a Race Coach Level 2 course, please get in touch with me. The courses are suitable for a good club racer with personal knowledge of club and/or regional racing and a broad basis of coaching skills. You can find out more information here.
Club Membership Census
The Club Membership Census is now live, clubs should have received your invite to take part, along with the questions. The census informs us of club membership trends and enables us to put together the insights that we send out and feedback on at the Affiliated Club Conference.
