The festive season is now behind us (we hope you had a good one - and we wish you a happy & healthy 2019) and as we fall into the New Year we know that along with the cold weather, the sporting conference season is just around the corner. RYA Scotland Conferences and Gatherings - as well as those held by RYA and other partners - are a great opportunity to meet with other clubs, centres, volunteers, staff and professionals from across the sporting landscape.

The RYA Scotland team are running two events in February (more information below) and are attending a number of others including RYA Stakeholder Conference (January), RYA Training Conference (February), RYA Sailability Conference (February),  and RYA Race Officer Refresher Day (February). Added to this the RYA Dinghy Show takes place in March and clubs & centres will begin to look at getting ready for the season ahead - phew!!

RYA Scotland Development Conference - Sunday 24 February 2019

The Participation & Development Team of RYA Scotland are organising the Development Conference for 2019 before it takes a break for regional conferences later in the year and early 2020. An exciting programme has been finalised for our 2019 venue and we are looking forward to welcoming a variety of clubs, centres, partners, presenters and staff to the event. This year's venue is the DoubleTree by Hilton Glasgow Westerwood Spa & Golf Resort.

Among our presenters will be Kate Fortnam, The Green Blue Campaign Manager for the RYA who will look at Environmentally sustainable clubs and events. She will delve into the issues facing clubs and events as well as sharing good practice and discussing how small changes can make a big difference. One of both RYA Scotland and the RYA's key aims is to 'promote safe and responsible boating' and Kate will help delegates to look at this can be extended to a local level.

The cost for this year's event is £18 for affiliated clubs & centres and it is once again open to both affiliated and non-affiliated organisations.

We have our '3 for 2' offer in place for affiliated clubs & centres, although due to our new booking system on Eventbrite, all three participants need to sign up at the same time.

For more information about the event please see our Events page here and to book your place then please visit our Eventbrite booking page

Please note the closing date is 10 February 2019.

Needing staff or looking for Instructing Work

As part of the Instructor Gathering and Development Conference we are hoping to showcase Clubs & Centres who require instructors for the 2019 season. We are offering this match-making opportunity as we know that 'getting instructors' is often one of the most difficult problems that our clubs and centres have.

Therefore, organisations shall be asked to provide details on any 'gaps/opportunities' they would like to fill for 2019 including numbers, dates, qualification levels etc.

Similarly, any freelance instructors looking for opportunities shall be able to advertise themselves, including their availability and qualification levels.

We shall be looking for this information prior to the events and would ask that if you are interested you contact Nikki Stewart or Liza Linton via the RYA Scotland office - admin@ryascotland.org.uk

RYA Scotland Class Academies

We are just over half way through the supportive training opportunities that are the Class Academies. Led by a Head Coach, these 'weekends' are a great fun way to develop your skills as well as for sailors looking to take the next step into racing.

For many 'classes' the fourth weekend of training takes place in middle January but there are still opportunities to promote this training to your club members and for sailors to hone their skills before the 2019 summer season begins in earnest.

Further details and dates can be found here

Club Development Framework

The final element of the January Club Chat looks back at a the RYA Scotland Club Development Framework, a new initiative that was discussed at the 2018 Club & Principals Conference. The framework provides a structure to development as well as some tips, tools and ideas that clubs can use to either accelerate their thinking or 'sense-check' what they are already doing.

There were 6 affiliated clubs over the first two workshops at Orkney Sailing Club (November) and East Lothian Yacht Club (December) with 24 delegates discussing what development means to them and their clubs as well as sharing best practice and ideas. We are looking to bringing this new tool to the Development Conference as well as taking it out on the road again later this year.
