September 2019 Club Chat

A chance to look at what's coming up over the next couple of months.

It’s September and the weather has definitely turned – Autumn is on its way! In ‘club-land’ it’s a time for us to reflect on a great summer of activity, to start to think about what we would do differently and potentially fit in some last minute sailing before the season finishes.

In the office, our team is gearing up for a busy time with the planning and preparations in full swing for the Regional Gatherings starting in November, gathering nominations for the RYA Scotland Club of the Year and for meetings with our focus clubs. Added to this, we are also preparing for the training & sailing events that take place over the second hand of the year – Youth & Junior Champs (21-22nd Sept), the Class Academy programme (kicking off on 14th Sept), this year’s Scotland’s Boat Show (11-13th October), Pre-Course and SI Courses but to name a few.

Before we start with what is coming up, we must say a huge thanks to all that were involved in the Scottish Club Trophy at Loch Earn Sailing Club on 17th & 18th August 2019. The feedback we’ve received has been fantastic and the event could not be run without the support of volunteers and coaches. Also, thanks to the club for having us and making us so welcome!

In terms of planning, one thing that’s just around the corner is the Annual Awards:

One of the main things we would like to draw your attention to this year are the changes in the RYA Scotland Annual Awards. This year we are planning to link the Scottish Club of the Year into the overall RYA / Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year Awards. This places a completely different timescale to this part of our awards and the closing date is just round the corner - 20th September and further information & nomination forms can be found here . If you would like to nominate your club to be recognised for all the hard work it does then please do not delay in applying! We are always happy to chat through the process if that helps.

We at RYA Scotland are also keen to find out ‘Who Makes a Difference to Your Time Afloat’ and the awards look to recognise and reward our volunteers, participants and clubs (see above). The nomination process is open and more information on the changes for this year and how to nominate can be found here

Specifically for junior sailors – every year the JMST holds an opportunity to support a junior sailor with a boat/board and that opportunity is NOW! The declaration of eligibility form can be found here. Applications will close the day after the Youth and Junior Championships at the end of September.

It is aimed at promising youngsters who display enthusiasm, drive, talent and commitment to the sport and those who may not ordinarily have the opportunity or financial backing to achieve their goals. The trust supports at least one young sailor per year from each region and each of the 3 home countries, gifting them with 2 years of exclusive use of their own boat donated to their club or centre which will then support and continue to benefit other young sailors in the future.

All of the information on eligibility etc. can be found on the JMST page on the OnBoard website.

There are also lots of opportunities to get involved and meet various members of the team over the coming months:

We are in the planning stages of the Regional Gatherings. We will be holding three club development conferences in Aviemore (16th Nov), Glasgow (30th Nov) and Dundee (18th Jan) looking at topics that shall help support clubs in their own development. More information will be out shortly and we hope to see a number of you there!

This year’s Scotland’s Boat Show (11-13th Oct) will not only hold the RYA Scotland Club of the Year Awards and the RYA Scotland EGM, but will host a number of ‘on the water’ training sessions in RIBs and Motor Cruisers as well as Yacht sessions. We will also have the annual Gold Members Reception along with the RYA Members lounge where you can grab a coffee and a chat with fellow sailors, clubs, volunteers and staff. Let’s hope the weather stays nice and we get some quality time to catch-up!
