A series of short video case studies to help you understand discrimination and equality. Watch the films and consider 'what would our organisation do in that situation?'
The scenarios have been created with the help of volunteers and staff. They present some situations that have actually arisen, or that could happen in your club or organisation, and suggest some possible solutions. No situation will be identical to these examples, but we hope that you will gain an understanding of the need to provide a welcoming service to all of your members, volunteers, staff or customers and protect your organisation from claims of discrimination.
The Equality Act 2010 seeks to create an inclusive environment that doesn’t unfairly disadvantage a person or group because of their characteristics or differences. It is unlawful for an organisation to discriminate against, harass or victimise someone on the grounds of one or more of nine protected characteristics: Age, Disability, Gender Reassignment, Marriage or Civil Partnership, Pregnancy or Maternity, Race, Religion or Belief and Sexual Orientation.
The films are for guidance only. To download our information leaflet on the Equality Act 2010 please see the RYA Equality Policy page.
