Description

The Shifting Sands of Navigation and Pilotage for Small Vessels at Sea

The functions and abilities of electronic navigation aids are astounding, allowing us to plan, carry out and monitor a passage by quickly drawing on multiple sources of information. Of course, no system is perfect, so it’s important to be aware of the benefits and limitations that come with using digital tools as we move away from paper charts. The Royal Institute of Navigation is running a conference taking a more in-depth look at the switch from paper to electronic charts.

Organised by its Small Craft Group, the hybrid event is aimed at leisure craft users and will cover the impact and practicalities of the move to digital.

The UKHO extended its deadline for phasing out paper charts from 2026 to at least 2030, but some national hydrographic offices are planning to switch as early as 2026.

The conference will explain the implications of the switch to boaters, covering:

  • Training
  • Back-up systems
  • Software standardisation
  • Regulations for new electronic equipment

Due to the global nature of navigation, the event will also highlight the need for standards to be agreed internationally, so its easier for boaters to use equipment regardless of who its manufactured by.

Speakers

Speakers at the Conference include Richard Falk, RYA Director of Training and Qualifications, Anders Bergström from Raymarine, Jelte Liebrand from Savvy Navvy, Paul McKenzie and Luke Allen from Furuno, Lucy Wilson from Imray and Jane Russell from the RIN, C-Map and UKHO.
