Horning Sailing Club, based on the Norfolk Broads, was awarded the Martin Broom Trophy by the Norfolk and Suffolk Boating Association (NSBA)’s Chairman Ben Falat during the Club’s Regatta Week at the start of August. Awarded for outstanding contribution to Broads boating, the accolade recognises Horning Sailing Club’s efforts, particularly drawing upon three aspects.

Firstly, the Club’s Training Centre – which was set up in 2004. Beginning with six young sailors, this has significantly grown to become one of the club’s most important activities, with a team of some thirty volunteer instructors. The Club has also developed to become an RYA OnBoard, Sailability, and in 2021, a RYA British Youth Sailing Recognised Club.

Secondly, the club’s work in the community - providing access to the Broads and to sailing through its engagement with schools, youth groups and the public.

Thirdly, the annual Three Rivers Race, organised and run by the club’s volunteers, the 50-mile course seeing competitors have 24 hours to complete the course through the Broads and under bridges, the 60th Race having taken place in 2021.

Ben said: “Horning Sailing Club is the epitome of Broads Sailing – the Club has existed since 1938, doing what it does locally on the River Bure, around the corner on Hoveton Little Broad and making extensive use of the River Bure as far as Thurne and Acle. In particular however, the Club does not sit and repeat “same-old…”, but is proactive in developing the best of Broads Sailing”.

Club Commodore, Holly Hancock, said “We are honoured and very grateful to accept this award on behalf of the members of Horning Sailing Club. As an entirely volunteer-run club, everyone works very hard to make the club a friendly, welcoming and great place to be – and this is a fantastic boost for our members after a challenging year. With Martin Broom having previously been a member of HSC, this award is particularly fitting, and we look forward to continuing to develop and progress the club further.”
