Following feedback from RYA Welfare Officers and members of clubs, the RYA Safeguarding and EDI team have created new safeguarding guidance documents for RYA affiliates. The documents provide affiliates with detailed support and information which should now be added as part of an affiliate’s safeguarding processes.
The Changing Room Guidance provides best practice behaviour surrounding clubs and centre’s changing rooms and toilets, the RYA will also be producing a poster to accompany the guidance to promote polite etiquette in changing areas. This document should also be referred to when updating your club or centre’s safeguarding policy. If you need any support in making this update, please contact the RYA Safeguarding team.
Modern Day Manners is an inclusive language guide which has been created to provide support to clubs and centres when negotiating the ever-changing language landscape. The guide highlights the dos and don’ts of language as well as giving explanations as to why some terms may be found offensive. Much of the language in the document relates to protected characteristics such as gender, religion, or race. A poster to accompany the guide will be available shortly to display in clubs and centres.
The Trans and Non-binary Inclusion in Sailing and Boating Guidance from 2019 has now been reviewed and updated. The new and improved document has top tips on how to ensure clubs and centres are inclusive and welcoming to new trans and non-binary members.
The Community Engagement Guide has been designed as a toolkit to support clubs in diversifying their offer to a range of different participants and gives advice on how to ensure that a warm welcome is received by all new members regardless of their background.
If you are a member of an RYA affiliated club, class or training centre and would like to receive a copy of any of the above documents, email: equality@rya.org.uk or safeguarding@rya.org.uk.
