Steering The Course in Scotland

Scotland is very much taking part in the global women's sailing festival, Steering The Course, which starts today and runs until the 29th.

Women of RYA Scotland’s Pioneer Project network plan to share their involvement in sailing and encourage others to want to be a part of the sport or progress within it, as part of World Sailing’s Steering The Course Festival.

The campaign aims to introduce women and girls across the globe to the sport of sailing and promote further opportunities for those already involved. Whether training, racing, or just enjoying the seas and lochs we’re hoping women and their clubs will share their involvement in sailing and encourage others to get involved at any level.

Pioneer Robyn Francis said. “We’ve got Wrath o’ Strath coming up for all students as well as anyone who wants a shot of Team Racing. It is mixed boat random pair team racing, so you turn up and get mixed about in lots of teams, it’s really great fun. We are putting the spotlight on that as there is really strong female participation among the racers and the crew delivering the event.”

Robyn Phillips, Training Development Officer said. “Steering the course is a great chance to showcase women in our sport and to join other women in celebrating both what the sport has to offer and uniting to face the challenges to women participating in sport”

“We are at Prestwick Sailing Club to support a women’s coaching day in preparation for their club regatta this weekend and will be heading to catch up with the Instructors involved in delivering the ‘No Buoys Allowed’ event at Port Edgar Watersports on the 29th of May”

RDO, Georgia Moran said: “Whether you are new to the sport or have been sailing for years, we want to see and hear you! Tag @RYASctoland and #SteeringTheCourse throughout this week and let us know what you are up to.”

“This festival is all about celebrating you!”

As a flavour here are some of the events currently taking part in Scotland.

If your venue runs sessions specifically for women, female club races, or any other initiatives then we would love to hear from you!

You may also want to celebrate the women at your club including coaches, instructors, mark layers, race officials, helm or trimmers and volunteers.

We’d also love to share your content on social media so please tag @RYAScotland on social media and use the hash tag is #SteeringTheCourse
