Last month RYA Scotland welcomed onboard Ben Luckett, who joins us as interim Pathway Sailing Officer – just in time for a busy season afloat.
With a strong sailing, windsurfing, and foiling background, Ben has hit the ground running by getting out on the road meeting clubs, contacts, and sailors – not to mention supporting our successful Youth & Junior Championships at the end of June.
With his sailing journey starting in an Enterprise at the age of 5 on the East Coast in Felixstowe, the outdoors are important to Ben and have shaped a lot of his previous experience. Between studying Adventure Education at the University of Chichester, and carrying out several seasons abroad managing Mark Warner centres - Ben brings with him an undeniable passion as well as a wealth of RYA qualifications and expertise.
Now having moved north of the border, Ben says he’s feeling motivated, and hopes to offer a friendly face.
He said “The most exciting thing about the new role is seeing the amazing work and passion people are putting into our sports.
“Our future Sailors, Windsurfers, Coaches and more have so much to look up to.
“I really hope that in my role this summer I can help people thrive and provide support where needed to encourage our young sailors into a life in sailing.”
Reflecting on the appointment, Pathway Manager Jamie Rogers said:
“Ben's extensive experience in the sailing world positions him perfectly for his new role as Interim Pathway Sailing officer role for RYA Scotland.
“His practical knowledge gained through years of working at large RYA training centres in the UK and abroad, as well as within clubs to develop pathway opportunities and manage large regatta events provides a deep understanding of the pathway, all of which will be a great asset in Scotland.
"Ben's appointment brings a dynamic and hands-on approach to nurturing sailors and enhancing the pathway team's effectiveness on the ground.
“Overall, Ben's role not only leverages his experience to enhance the training and development of young sailors but also ensures that the pathway team remains connected and supportive within the broader sailing community.”
With the pathway team now well equipped to support and nurture youth and junior participants to become the best sailors they can be, we can’t wait to continue our summer afloat.
