Calling all instructors! The new RYA Wing & Windsurfing for Instructors book was officially launched at the RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show, supported by Sunsail (Saturday 24 February).
Liz McMaster, RYA Chief Instructor, Dinghy, Wing and Windsurf, joined instructors from the Official Test Centre (OTC) to unveil the new publication.
“We’re really excited to be launching this book which is a ‘how to’ for anyone wanting to teach windsurfing, windfoiling and wingfoiling. It covers everything from coaching to getting started and how to get people excited about the sport” explains Liz.
Previously known as the RYA Windsurfing Instructor Manual, the publication is a companion for the RYA National and Youth Wing and Windsurfing schemes. It’s packed with information for teaching onshore, communication skills and on-water practical instruction.
Three years ago, the RYA launched a wingsurfing training scheme offering courses from beginner level to foiling with confidence. Winging uses a handheld wing to propel a board on the water, it’s easy to learn, the kit is affordable, transportable and you can even get started on a large windsurf board or windSUP (stand-up paddleboard).
“The past ten years has really seen winging grow in popularity, and foiling has changed the landscape entirely. There’s a great crossover from windsurfing into wingsurfing- it really can be the foiling sport for the masses” Lizz said.
The book also includes information on how to progress as an instructor with a full section on how students learn.
Mia Adcock is an RYA Wing Instructor and said: “For anyone thinking of becoming a winging instructor, now is the perfect time. It’s a great career and instructing has given me so many opportunities. Why not see what the world of winging can bring!”
You can pick up a copy of RYA Wing and Windsurfing for Instructors from the RYA Shop. RYA members save 15% or 20% from the RYA Publications stand (D40) at the RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show.
