Norfolk Club Receives Prestigious Broads Award
Horning Sailing Club, an RYA Training Centre, OnBoard and Sailability Club based on the Norfolk Broads, was recently awarded the Martin Broom Memorial Trophy for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Broads Boating’ by the Norfolk and Suffolk Boating Association (NSBA).
Given the current circumstances, the presentation has been unable to take place in person, but instead took place virtually at the NSBA’s AGM last month. NSBA Chairman Ben Falat outlined the Club’s achievements, including their efforts in organising the Three Rivers Race for sixty years, and the popular RYA Training Centre which has not only brought hundreds of young people and adults onto the water, but also sees as many as thirty volunteer instructors out on the water at any one time.
Club Commodore Holly Hancock said: “We are thrilled to accept this award on behalf of the members of Horning Sailing Club. Horning is entirely volunteer run, and it’s thanks to the fantastic efforts of these volunteers that the Club’s activities take place – from training children and adults to the Three Rivers Race, being part of the Horning Boat Show to racing. Nothing would be possible without the dedication and hard work of the Club’s volunteers, and we are so pleased that their contributions have been valued in this way. Like many other clubs, we’ve had a really tough year – so this is an incredibly welcome boost to morale. The Club is looking forward to continuing an exciting year, by exhibiting at the very first virtual RYA Dinghy Show later this month (on 27/28 February) and celebrating the 60th Three Rivers Race later in the season.”
The Martin Broom Memorial Trophy has been awarded annually since 2014, established to honour the memory of Martin Broom MBE, a familiar name both locally and further afield – as someone who made a lasting contribution to all aspects of boating on the Broads. Previous winners include the Nancy Oldfield Trust, Broadsbeat, and Waveney Sailability.
The trophy presentation will take place once it is permitted to do so.
