Respect from Scottish Boaters clear as RNLI nears its third century lifesaving at sea
Echoing the RNLI’s mission to respect the water, RYA Scotland has a strong admiration for the work of Lifeboat volunteers who on many occasions have come to the aid of sailors in need.
And, with the Lifeboats celebrating a very special 200 year anniversary this year, we're looking forward to seeing our RYA Scotland affiliates show some support.
With the two organisations missions often interwoven, our very own RYA Scotland CEO Finlo Cottier provides an additional insight into the lifesaving charity, as a Deputy Coxswain of Oban Lifeboat Station’s all weather Trent Class Lifeboat.
Eager to see more clubs and centres pay thanks this season, Finlo said:
“The RNLI and recreational boating have always been closely linked.
“Many RNLI crew are members of local sailing or boating clubs and inevitably there are times when recreational sailors need assistance from the RNLI – myself included.
“When I moved from the Isle of Man, which is the historic home of the RNLI, to Oban I joined two local organisations – Oban Sailing Club and Oban Lifeboat station.
“Maritime communities instinctively look out for each other and so it’s natural for RYA Scotland to encourage support for the RNLI, not only in its 200th year but simply as part of what we do.”
With respect for the Lifeboat amongst the boating community clear to see, it’s no surprise so many of us have become invested in the RNLI’s 200 Voices Podcast, which highlights the long running and wide ranging impact the charity make.
Released daily in the run up to the 200 year anniversary on March 4th, episodes feature a mixture of famous names, long time donors, crew members, and even those who owe their lives to the Lifeboat.

And so, in an effort to pay thanks for the amazing work the RNLI carry out all year round, we're encouraging our RYA Scotland affiliates to show their appreciation.
With many clubs and centres already running regattas and fundraisers in the name of the RNLI, we want to see even more of you getting out there and shaking some buckets.
