Since boats have returned to the water as restrictions have eased the RNLI have been called out to a number of incidents to rescue boats which have broken down, or that have been ill prepared for the conditions, which could have been avoided.

To highlight this the RNLI and RYA Scotland have created a short video explaining some of the measures you should consider before setting out, with a key message to stay safe afloat.

Before you go make sure you:

  • Plan ahead, check the weather and tides before you leave.
  • Check your engine thoroughly before you go, ensuring you have tools, spare parts and fuel.
  • Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
  • Stay safe on board and ensure all your safety equipment is working properly.
  • Track your progress and always carry an alternative means for calling for help.
  • Know your limits and find a training course to improve your knowledge.
  • And if you are in trouble or see someone in difficulty, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
  • STOP, THINK AND STAY SAFE AFLOAT

The RNLI have a useful guide to help you prepare and can be found here.

Consider using the RYA SafeTrx app to monitor your boat journeys as it can alert emergency contacts should you fail to arrive on time. It is an app for both Android and Apple iOS smartphones that allows you to track your journey on your phone. Find out more here.
