On the 22nd and 23rd of February, the highly anticipated RYA Dinghy and Watersports Show returned to Farnborough International Conference Centre for another packed weekend of discussions, exhibitors and celebrations.
To add to the excitement, the Saturday saw the announcement of the 2025 RYA Awards, across which we were pleased to see a number of Scottish faces recognised.
In the individual awards, Malcolm Garrington was celebrated in the Inspirational Race Coach / Instructor category for his invaluable contributions at Bridge of Don Sea Cadets and the countless youngsters he’s taught to sail over the last 30 years.
Now the Principle at Bridge of Don, Malcolm is always willing to share his knowledge and expertise with others, and has inspired lots of sailors to embark on their own instructing journeys.
He is also dedicated to strengthening and developing relationships with other organisations in the North East, including Peterhead Sailing Club, and Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust. A well known face in the local community, ‘inspiring’ certainly seems to be a word associated with Malcolm.
Also in the individual awards, Tony Walker of Forfar Sailing Club (FSC) was recognised with a long service award for his commitment and input over 50 years.
From his two stints as Commodore, to acting as key liaison between the Forfar and the University of Aberdeen Sailing Club, Tony has remained dedicated to nurturing and expanding opportunities at FSC.
With no goal too big for Tony to take on, he has his sights set high, and is thoroughly dedicated to securing a positive future for the club.
In the 2025 Club Awards, we were thrilled to see Prestwick Sailing Club shortlisted in the ‘Young Person’s Club’ category. Recognised for their efforts in rebuilding a competitive cohort of sailors post-covid, the club truly is a thriving hub of activity.
With a strong set of young members who compete nationally (and internationally) across a range of classes, Prestwick are dedicated to nurturing keen and talented sailors and have established a positive environment ensuring that those who compete on various circuits are also present and active at the club.
Prestwick also remain focussed on growing participation, particularly amongst underrepresented groups. Enabled by a strong team of instructors, Prestwick are proud to deliver frequent RYA tuition, and a well-supported summer programme.
