Starting them young at Gravesend Sailing Club

Edward’s great-grandparents, Jim and Jean Twyman, joined the club in 1948, starting a continuous run of more than 70 years of family membership.

Young Edward was held safely by his father John, as they took to the water during August on the River Thames at Gravesend with maternal grandparents Penny and Steve Davies. Edward's mother Harriet, who is currently Vice Commodore at the club, stayed on shore for this trip.

Grandfather Steve, a volunteer member of the RYA London and South East regional team, helmed the outing. He said: “It's always good to start them young, in the same way both his mother and his grandmother did. And both were running training at the club when their first child was born.

“Edward’s been introduced to a sport which can be enjoyed in so many different ways, from a gentle sail on a calm day, to the excitement of crashing through the waves in half a gale, sailing round the country or further afield, and arriving at other places from the water.”

Gravesend Sailing Club is an RYA Recognised Training Centre.
