Changes to Welfare Officer training

New training opportunities soon to be available for Welfare Officers.

Volunteers are helping participants prepare for sailing.

We have now made the decision to redesign and update the Welfare Officer training course. The course will now include an online classroom session, initially delivered by the RYA Safeguarding team.

This change is in line with best practice, and we hope will give the new Welfare Officers a deeper understanding of their role and the wider safeguarding landscape. We also hope the course will help build confidence and resilience for the volunteers in the role.

Have your say

We would like to offer Welfare Officers the opportunity to influence the content of the sessions and would invite anyone who would like to suggest specific content to let us know via the Welfare Officer Training Feedback Form.

Once the new course has been produced, we will be creating a small working group to experience the course and offer feedback or suggest any improvements.

Get involved

Once the course has been trialled, we will also be looking to create a voluntary role for Safeguarding Trainers to be able to support the team in delivering this new training. There is nothing more powerful that training being delivered by those with the lived experience of being a Welfare Officer in a grassroots setting.

If you are interested in any of the above opportunities, email the RYA Safeguarding & Equality team with your expression of interest.
