BYS Welsh Regional Junior Championships 2020 to go ahead

11 Sep 20

RYA Cymru Wales has been working incredible hard implementing the Welsh Government guidance and following the announcement on the 11th September, it has been decided that running the Welsh Regional Junior Championships in one venue is sadly, not plausible.

This year the Welsh Junior Regional Championships with be split across 3 venues, with one venue running two weekends of activity. Each venue can host up to 20 sailors and a full weekend of racing can take place for each Junior class.

RYA Cymru Wales is very aware of the time and commitment that families put into attending events. Therefore, it has been decided that the risk associated with running a one-day event and potential implications with regard to the weather this time of year are too great to ensure quality racing.

The following venues will be hosting the following classes–

  • 26-27th September Welsh National Sailing Academy, Plas Heli – Laser 4.7 / ILCA 4
    • The age limit has been set so that Laser Radial/ ILCA 6 sailor's can enter and race the Laser 4.7/ILCA 4
  • 26–27th September Neyland Yacht Club – RS Tera Sport and Pro
  • 26-27th September Pembrokeshire Performance Sailing Academy – Topper
  • 3rd-4th October Welsh National Sailing Academy, Plas Heli – Optimist
    • It was not possible to secure an appropriate venue on the original weekend and it was felt it would be a good opportunity for pre-event racing before the Optimist EOS 17-18th October.

Entries are capped at 20 sailors at each venue, this is subject to review and it will be increased if possible.

Unfortunately, there isn't the capacity at the available venues to be able to host the Youth classes this year and sadly this also means it is not possible host a Regatta/ OnBoard Fleet.

Gerwyn Owen, RYA Cymru Wales Chief Executive Officer, said: “Inthese uncertain times we’re delighted to be able to run the 2020 RegionalJunior Championships in Wales, although naturally they will look and feel a bitdifferent to previous years. Due to the current restrictions we have had toadapt the format, and we’re grateful to our affiliated clubs and centres whohave stepped up to help put on our event across Wales."

"Our young sailors have missed so much of the season due tothe lockdown, but since restarting activity in the middle of May our clubs andcentres have been providing as much sailing as possible within the restrictionsat the time. We look forward to our young sailors honing their skills over aweekend of racing, in a safe and secure environment that is provided bysailing."

The RYA Cymru Wales team hope that you will be able to join us at the race venue for your class. The main aim of the event is for sailors to have safe and enjoyable racing, and it is felt with the above approach we can achieve this.
