RYA Scotland – Recruitment of new Chairperson

RYA Scotland is one of the foremost Sport Governing Bodies in Scotland.  We protect and promote the interests of Scotland’s 76,000 strong boating community and the 21,000 people in 274 RYA Affiliated Clubs, Class Associations and Training Centres across Scotland.

We have come a long way in a short time and are very proud of our achievements and our innovative approaches. Even through these current testing times we have delivered continuously for our community and pushed new and innovative ways to keep in touch and spread our message.

Our Members and our stakeholders across Scotland’s boating community want and deserve to have the very best leadership and support from their governance structure.

Our Board of Directors serves this diverse community by leading the strategic direction of the organisation in Scotland.  The leadership of this Board is one of the most critical roles in our organisation and we are seeking a successor to our current Chair.

The role will require a background in a leadership role at a senior level and the time and ability to support our considerable representative activity. A knowledge of boating is desirable but not essential as you will have the support of the CEO, our entire staff team and our other Directors who live and breathe all things boats. However, a deep commitment to our purpose and our values and standards will be essential.

As well as chairing our Board meetings, the role involves time spent representing the organisation across Scotland at key events and working with colleagues from across the UK at the Royal Yachting Association on a national level. The Chair also acts on behalf of the other Directors in liaising, networking and engaging with sportscotland at chair level and through sportscotland with other sports governing bodies and other relevant organisations at a strategic level.  The ability and willingness to travel to these engagements is an element that is important in the role.

We are passionate about equality and inclusion and welcome applications from all.

We are proud to be the first and only Sport Governing Body in Scotland to hold the LGBT Youth Scotland Foundations Charter and to have been the first in Scotland to achieve the Sport Council’s Advanced Equality Standard.  We have a focus on engaging women in sailing, disability is no barrier to participation and we are actively changing to include young people in our decision making so when we say we welcome applications from all – we really mean it!

Board meetings will move around the country and, with options to meet electronically being a normal part of our methods, we are keen to have representation from across Scotland.

This role is voluntary and not remunerated, however RYA Scotland will meet your expenses for attending meetings and support your development in your chosen role.

The best way to find out more about this role is to speak to James Allan the CEO.

Feel free to call him on 07824 887247. You can also look at the role description in the  Related Documents section.

If you want to apply right away then please email your CV with a short covering letter to admin@ryascotland.org.uk
