We're committed to producing books that everyone can enjoy. The advances in digital publishing over recent years have helped us make the files accessible to those with many different types of impairments.
We’ve evolved our publishing approach to the extent that we can deliver suitable content using desktop and mobile assistive technology. This will directly help those who are partially sighted; have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia; have non-specific learning disabilities; are physically disabled and read with a switch device.
We’ve also taken certain design considerations on board and made key adjustments to our presentation of text, numbers, boxes, tables, borders, layout, images, and symbols to help support our more accessible approach moving forward.
The key accessibility features we’re adding to our eBook files are:
- Adjustable text size, font, and background colour
- Compatibility with screen reader software, VoiceOver and Text-to-Speech
- Text descriptions for images
- Captions for videos
Making the digital files accessible is one thing, but we are also ensuring that we distribute them through channels that support the many accessibility features, so that they are readable on multiple platforms and devices such as computers, tablets and phones.
These accessible eBooks are being released on Apple Books and Google Play Books in order for us to take full advantage of Apple and Android's enhanced functionality and intuitive features. If you require an accessible RYA eBook, you should purchase through Apple Books or Google Play.
You can access books available on Apple Books through any Mac or iOS device as long as you're logged in with your iTunes account.
You can access Google Play Books on your Android device, iOS device or online through your desktop computer as long as you're signed in to your Google account. Please note that Google Play books don't currently support complex animations, videos or enhancements.
We’ve tried to account for as much as is reasonable but if you have any specific requirements then please get in touch by emailing email@example.com and we’ll see how we can help.
Accessible Packs & Course Books
There is no digitally accessible course material (e.g. Day Skipper student packs) by default due to the level of demand and the rate at which it changes, but we are able to provide accessible versions directly to a student on request. We do it on this basis as the course material is restricted and not on sale to the general public.
Where appropriate, we will provide the student with an EPUB file (uniquely coded to them) which can be imported into either Apple Books or Google Play Books to use in the same way as our retail eBooks.
So, if you are an instructor looking for an accessible digital copy of course material to provide to your student, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. You'll need to provide the name of your Training Centre and the course the student is doing for us to be able to advise what accessible material is available (e.g. it is currently not possible to provide accessible charts or almanacs).
In order to provide accessible content to the student, we'll need their name, email address and whether they require a book available on Apple Books or a Google Play Book.
Turnaround times will depend on the content requested so please give us as much notice as possible.
