Your child will enjoy their sailing more if they are sailing in boats with friends and will more likely be able to take advantage of any training your club has on offer if they are in a boat which is sailed at your club. The clubs For Sale Board could also be a useful place to find your new boat

What size is your child? Children come in all shapes of sizes as do boats. The best chance you have of your child enjoying their boat is to have one which fits them. Most junior boats come with different size sails (e.g. Optimist, Topper & Tera) so that your child can grow with them. Don’t put your child off by getting them a boat to ‘grow into’ which is too powerful for them. Remember you will want them to be able to sail it in a variety of conditions not just on calm summer days and want them to keep coming back for more

Double or single handed? Think about your child and what they would like to sail. Many young sailors prefer double handed boats and gain confidence from having another person in the boat with them as well has having lots of fun. Equally some young sailors prefer the thrill of being in charge of their boat on their own.

How much time do you have to maintain the boat? Boats are easier to sail if they are well maintained so make sure you have the time to look after the boat.

What is your budget? It is possible to get your child’s first boat for less than £100, try looking at your club notice board or Apollo Duck

Live in the present with an eye on the future. Children master sailing really quickly and it won't be long before your young sailor wants the next challenge. Most children's boats have the capacity to grow with them through changing sails and there are lots of opportunities for their skills to develop both at their club and through class association activity as well as the RYA pathway. Remember, enjoy the journey and watching your child skills and confidence grow as they become great sailors
