Real-world application of #DigitalFirst across all schemes, with James Davies + Joe Wallington-Lardi
You've heard the buzz, now it's time to take action! Join us for an exciting session where you'll learn how to integrate #DigitalFirst into your teaching across our schemes. Discover how to empower your students to select the right tools and techniques when planning a voyage.
'Digital First’ describes a new teaching approach to the core principles of navigation by utilising trusted digital sources of information for voyage planning and execution. This method promotes efficiency, allowing more time to understand and interpret data.
The philosophy emphasises grasping overarching principles of navigation before focusing on manual calculations. While digital tools are the starting point, non-digital methods continue to serve as an essential method of independent verification. Students are encouraged to critically assess the accuracy of all information and must understand the tolerance of any forecast or predicted data to ensure a suitable safety margin is applied.
This balanced approach enhances planning efficiency while maintaining accuracy.
Clean Water Sport Alliance, Phil Horton
Pollution from various sources is contaminating the UK’s inland and coastal waters, harming ecosystems and causing illnesses among those who engage in water sports and activities. This pollution has also led to the cancellation or postponement of events, training sessions, and activities due to unsafe water conditions.
The Clean Water Sports Alliance is coming together to influence decision-makers and drive positive change. By working collaboratively, we aim to highlight these issues and create solutions to restore the UK’s blue spaces, making them safe for nature to thrive and for sport and recreation to be enjoyed.
Phil will discuss the Alliance’s efforts in influencing policy and action on water quality. He will also present the RYA’s position paper and provide guidance for individuals, clubs, and training centres.
