Welsh Junior Squads

The RYA Cymru Wales Junior Squads support around 30 sailors aged 15 and under. Find out how to apply and which classes are supported.

Sailors attend residential and non-residential camps where they get quality coaching from RYA Cymru Wales coaches and develop skills such as; independence, in depth knowledge about how the boat and sail work, psychology and physiology support and help setting a programme.

Applications for Welsh Squad places will be open in September. Please ensure you have a read of the 2021-2022 Squad Selection Policy in the link at the bottom of the page.

Travel and Events

Training takes place in North, South and West Wales. Sailors are encouraged to attend Welsh events, class ranking events, squad indicator events and to spend as much time on the water as possible outside organised training. Sailors will be offered event support by RYA Cymru Wales coaches at Welsh and class ranking events


The RYA Cymru Wales Junior Squad programme is heavily subsidised by Sport Wales, however, a contribution is required from sailors towards both the squad training sessions and event support.

The Welsh Sailing Youth and Junior Academy is for sailors who have the potential to win medals at National and International Junior, Youth & Senior competition in time. The Academy is open for selection at various times but the main entry point will be in the Winter.
