One year after launching the RYA affiliation process, we have learnt a lot and are now looking forward to supporting clubs and organisations through Affiliation 2025

We have recently sent your organisation's Main Contact a link and are asking all RYA affiliates to log in to their account and provide responses to the annual renewal questions.

Once complete, we will add your personalised affiliation recommendations to the portal. You will continue to be invoiced for your annual affiliation fee as in previous years.

What have we learnt?

When we started the process, we knew that our affiliates had a varied level of activity and participants within their membership, so we could not adopt a simple ‘one size fits all’ approach. We knew that people were in very different places in terms of their relationship and level of engagement with the RYA.

We have also had a considerable amount of feedback from our affiliates – the vast majority reflecting that this is the right journey to go on; however, in many cases, they are worried about the additional load this may place on the volunteers that already do so much to support sailing and boating.

We now understand that based on the responses to date, two-thirds of our affiliates who responded already have recommended elements in place. We have also seen a significant number of changes in contact details as our affiliates are now able to see what contact details we hold for their organisation. This will improve our ability to communicate with our affiliate network, particularly with our volunteer support.

We have just finished a very successful programme of regional Connected Conferences across England and the Home Countries, which has shown that our affiliates are embracing the support we provide. But it doesn’t stop there with a range of upcoming webinars available to all affiliate volunteers.

What about Affiliation 2025?

As we embark on Affiliation 2025, it’s important to reflect on why we have introduced this new process:

Opportunity
The affiliation process gives clubs and organisations the opportunity to make sure their policies and procedures are up to date and follow best practice, whilst also giving affiliates the ability to take advantage of funding opportunities (funding bodies require certain policies and procedures to be in place in order to obtain funding).

Prevent
Having the right policies and procedures in place allows our affiliates to reflect on what are the right processes for their activity which should help reduce risk.

Protect
Affiliates with the right policies and procedures in place reduces risk and in doing so protects their flag officers.

Support
Our affiliates have access to a range of support to help them have proportionate policies and procedures in place to support their activity. It also provides us with more contacts for your committee so we can reach out to and support the right person in the right areas.
