See Sailing Your Way

For those with visual impairment, sailing offers a sense of freedom and exhilaration like no other sport

Encouraging participation

Breaking barriers to create an inclusive environment is at the heart of the RYA and its club activity. With over 2 million people in the UK living with sight loss, the RYA’s initiative, See Sailing Your Way aims to welcome and encourage participation in blind sailing.

The water is open to everyone, and there’s so much to explore for blind and partially sighted people in our communities. Together with GBR Blind Sailing, the RYA’s goal is to assist sailing organisations, instructors, coaches, and volunteers to:

Sight loss and sailing

Around 340,000 people in the UK are registered blind or partially sighted, and they are twice as likely to be inactive compared to those without sight loss.

Despite this, blind and partially sighted people have a long history of enjoying and pursuing their passion for being on the water. In our community you’ll find blind sailors pushing boundaries by competing internationally, cruising the UK coasts, and developing their skillset in clubs.

About Blind Sailing UK

The RYA is working closely on See Sailing Your Way with registered charity Blind Sailing UK. Together, our aim is to increase sailing opportunities for blind and partially sighted people across the country.

Blind Sailing UK relies on volunteers to provide a fun and safe environment. Each volunteer helps in different ways, with some assisting onshore and others qualified under the RYA, offering their support on the water.
