March 2022

Following a lovely weekend, we are sure that lots of you are getting ready and prepared for the season ahead – let’s hope the weather continues.

Here at RYA Scotland, there has once again been lots going on, from club and centre meetings to instructor CPD and on the water coaching activity. We have also had a new member of staff start with us – Laura Cowan has joined us and taken over the Regional Development Officer (West) role.

On the vein of recruitment – we are still looking for a Regional Development Officer (North) to take over the great work that Ryan was doing in the area. So, if you would like to get involved in conversations around developing people, places and communities; talking about ‘why’ people are keen to be part of our sport – as a participant, volunteer, coach, staff member – and helping others to ensure that they are welcoming, truly open to all and a vital part of their local, & the boating, community then this role is right up your street! The application process for the Regional Development Officer (North) is open and more information can be found here. The closing date for applications is Monday 28th March at 12noon so there is not long to go! If you want a chat about the role then please do not hesitate to get in touch with Liza Linton

Continuing the opportunities for both online and in person collaboration, we have a number of chances to get together over the next month or so:

Creating a Safe and Welcoming Space for All Online session – 7-8pm on 30th March 2022

This is the second of our series of sessions (which started with the Affiliated Clubs and Recognised Organisations Conference) and focuses on ‘people’! Delivered in partnership with the Coaching Department of RYA Scotland, this session will explore how your organisation can develop successful, sustainable, supported, values and inclusive people for the future.

This online event is ideal for those who are involved in the management of your organisation or its activities – committee members, volunteers, staff etc. – and is completely free to delegates from RYA affiliated or recognised organisations.

Please note that the final session – focussing on communities – will take place from 7-8pm on Wednesday 27th April (focus on Communities). More information to follow!

To book your place for the 30th March, please see our bookwhen site here.

Register of Persons Holding a Controlled Interest in Land

As introduced at our Affiliated Clubs and Recognised Organisations Conference, from April 2021, there will be a legal requirement for certain organisations to register their interests in land (either as owner or tenant). We are working with Registers of Scotland and our RYA Legal team on providing guidance around this as we think that all our ‘unincorporated organisations’ will be required to register their interests if they own or have a 20+ year lease. We are also aware that this legislation may include moorings! There is some more information and a video outlining the requirements here.

We have managed to secure a session with the Registers of Scotland team for Wednesday 11th May, 6-7pm, which will be your opportunity to come along and find out more about how it relates to clubs, centres and organisations within sailing. The booking for this shall be open shortly, however please feel free to register your interest by emailing us here.

Instructor CPD

This weekend (19/20th March) saw the start of the RYA Scotland Coaching Department’s exciting series of in person, practical regional CPD days coming up for Dinghy, Windsurf and Powerboat Instructors.

These practical sessions will be a great chance to think about refreshing your own skills.  With an overarching theme of “Re-connect, Refresh and Get Ready” there will be a mix of personal skill development, creative thinking and kit preparation.

Workshops are aimed at dinghy, windsurfing and powerboat instructors and will vary slightly dependant on the region but will be following the above themes.  Please feel free to contact Robyn Phillips if you would like further information on your region.

The dates are:

26th March – Galloway Activity Centre (Dinghy/ Windsurf)

27th March – Loch Insh (Dinghy /Windsurf)

To sign up, visit the RYA Scotland CPD bookwhen site here

Finally, if you have any questions, then please do not hesitate to get in contact with the team. We hope you to catch up with you all soon!

Take care and stay safe!
