    British Youth Sailing Recognised Club

Since 1997, the RYA have worked in partnership with sailing clubs, as part of the Champion Club Programme, in order to develop young sailors in the pathway system. Scotland had 14 Champion Clubs as part of this UK programme. However, the programme was reviewed in early 2018 and was relaunched as the new 'British Youth Sailing (BYS) Recognised Club' at the Dinghy Show in March 2018.

In partnership RYA & RYA Scotland will target clubs that are demonstrating high quality race training and racing in the British Youth Sailing Recognised Classes, supporting the pathway. It is anticipated that a BYS Recognised Club shall allow junior sailors to develop their sailing and racing skills and encourage young sailors at grassroots level to stay in the sport.

The BYS Recognised Club status shall also distinguish those sailing clubs with a commitment to the development of junior and youth racing and race training, which is delivered in a safe and fun environment.

RYA BYS Recognised Club Current Benefits

There are a number of benefits for clubs involved in this programme, including:

    • Branding and “Recognised” Status for junior race training and racing – promotion by the RYA as an ideal venue to take young sailors in order to get them started and develop their skills,
    • Advice and Support from RYA Scotland
    • Coach Development opportunities for your club coaches
    • Dedicated website with resources and videos

Clubs who wish to achieve BYS Recognised Club Status must demonstrate that it runs a regular race training programme within at least one of the BYS Recognised Classes. In order to achieve the high standards of training that are expected of BYS Recognised Clubs, training must also be delivered by qualified RYA Coaches to RYA Recognised Training Centre standards (or equivalent) with a Safeguarding & Protecting Children Policy in place.

If you are interested in becoming a BYS Recognised Club then please give us a call at RYA Scotland so we can talk to you about the programme. It may be worth, in the first instance for the club to have a look at the essential criteria and how to apply for status before calling.
