Insurance for RYA race officials provided by Gallagher
Your questions answered by insurance broker Gallagher
As the RYA’s official Club Insurance partner for over 40 years, Gallagher can also provide a group insurance policy for race officials. The following article provides an overview of what this insurance can cover and who can access it.
What does Gallagher’s club insurance cover?
Policyholders are provided with indemnity for legal defence costs/expenses and, should they be held liable, in respect of:
- Bodily injury, including death, to a third party
- Loss or damage to the property of a third party
The above risk events must occur during the period of insurance and arising out of the performance of duties in accordance with the guidelines and/or rules of the RYA for claims to be valid.
These are brief product descriptions only. Please refer to the policy documentation paying particular attention to the terms and conditions, exclusions, warranties, subjectivities, excesses and any endorsements.
Who can access this cover?
The Gallagher RYA club insurance policy can provide public liability cover for full RYA members officiating on behalf of the insured club/association, on the basis that the individual is a member and either has suitable qualification and/or is deemed suitably experienced and competent by the insured club/association.
Any non-member of the club/association concerned should be made a temporary member for the event. See the policy wording for full information.
How can an RYA member access insurance for race officials?
The RYA has purchased a ‘block’ policy via Gallagher, providing all qualified/RYA member officials with automatic access to a ‘contingent’ public liability policy for provision of race official duties.
Any race official who takes out or renews their RYA race official membership automatically gains access to the policy.
This insurance can offer provide cover for RYA members who hold a current RYA accreditation for any one of the following qualifications:
- Regional or national race officer
- Regional or national judge
- Regional or national umpire
- Regional or national mark layer
If you have any questions about becoming a race official, please contact Jacqui Roberts, RYA race officials development officer, by emailing Jacqui.roberts@rya.org.uk.
What does ‘contingent’ mean in the context of public liability insurance?
‘Contingent’ liability cover relies on you having a primary public liability insurance policy in place, providing cover for your activities (organised by the host or organising body). If this policy fails to provide you with indemnity, then the Gallagher RYA policy can be accessed as a backup to help safeguard you.
