Case study

What was the situation?

Instructor retention has always been strong. Many instructors begin as Yachtmaster candidates and, through mentoring, progress to become Cruising Instructors. New Cruising Instructors are then supported to achieve their Yachtmaster Instructor qualification.

What action have you taken?

We focus on identifying promising candidates through our training schemes and provide mentoring at every stage. We also recruit and mentor younger instructors through university sailing teams, which has been very successful. An open-door approach means instructors know they can ask questions and seek advice whenever they need it.

What's the key message to share with others?

Strong retention relies on open communication. Take the time to mentor, share lesson plans, and pass on tips. Small, regular conversations make a big difference.

What has been the impact?

We have very low staff turnover and instructors often stay for many years. When they do move on to other opportunities, they frequently return, bringing back valuable skills and experience.

What's next?

We plan to keep adapting where needed but see no major changes ahead. The current approach works well and continues to build a loyal, experienced team.
