Supporting people with learning opportunities

Definition

Ensuring people in safety roles know what is expected of them, have opportunities to learn and practice, they reflect on the situations they face and are recognised for the contribution they make.

Steps

Step 1 Create a learning plan so staff and volunteers have opportunities to learn and practice safety skills and knowledge

Guidance

Your learning plan enables you to describe safety critical roles to new people and outline what is expected of them, ensures people are familiar with your ways of working, gives opportunities to learn new skills and practice existing ones and supports people so they get feedback on how they are performing, can reflect on situations they have faced and get recognition for what they are contributing.

It is always a balance what you require of people, in terms of learning, with the time and commitments they have.

There are so many ways people learn, for example: reading your procedures, looking at checklists, induction sessions, briefings, refreshers, course, practice, scenarios, reflective practice, or discussion. Perhaps the most common is picking up on ‘The way things are done here’ and observing how others behave.

Checklist

How do you induct people new into key safety roles?

Do you have a programme so people can learn and practice key skills and knowledge?

Do you log the training people receive?

  Do you encourage reflective practice?
