We recently caught up with Gavin Watson, Chief Executive of RYA Northern Ireland, to hear his thoughts on stepping into the role and what lies ahead for sailing across the region.

Filmed at Bangor Marina, the conversation offered a chance to reflect on both the opportunities and challenges facing the sport, from grassroots participation through to performance pathways and major sporting moments on the horizon.

A New Chapter for RYA Northern Ireland

Since taking on the role, Gavin has been keen to spend time listening to clubs, volunteers and members across Northern Ireland. He spoke about the importance of understanding the realities faced by those delivering sailing at club level and ensuring RYA Northern Ireland continues to offer practical, relevant support.

Volunteers and clubs remain central to the success of the sport, and Gavin highlighted the value of strong relationships across the sailing community in helping sailing thrive.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Gavin also reflected on some of the wider challenges facing sailing, including participation, access to facilities and ensuring the sport remains welcoming and inclusive for all.

At the same time, he spoke positively about the opportunities ahead, particularly the role major sporting events and wider visibility can play in inspiring people to get involved. Moments such as the Commonwealth Games help raise the profile of sailing and remind people of the pathways available within the sport.

Looking to the Future

Looking ahead, Gavin shared his optimism for sailing in Northern Ireland and the role RYA NI plays in supporting clubs, developing people and creating opportunities both on and off the water.

As he settles into the role, Gavin is focused on building on existing strengths, supporting those who give their time to the sport, and helping shape a positive and sustainable future for sailing across Northern Ireland.
