Statement from Corinne Cunningham
I have been a member of the RYA for over 15 years. I was brought up in Leigh-on-Sea but was a victim of the urban myth that if you can’t afford a boat you can’t learn to sail and started sailing through a community programme on the Charles River while living and working in Boston, USA. I completed my RYA windsurfing and dinghy sailing courses on family holidays (learning with affiliates in various countries) before my family started yachting and I completed the day skipper qualification.
I have been on the RYA Board for the past four years and am keen to extend my tenure for a further term. Continuity on the Board will ensure that the work started with Together on Water can be prioritised and my involvement on the Audit & Risk Committee can develop without interruption.
Thanks to my 25 years of financial and commercial experience as a Finance Director, primarily at RELX plc, I have been able to provide experience and insight to RYA as it seeks to deliver digital transformation in its publishing, training and events businesses. I have managed risk and dealt with various scenarios at live events, IT & systems and associated organisational restructures – all of which are very relevant to the challenges that the RYA face.
I am currently Senior Independent Director and Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee for Aquatics GB. With my experience of managing risk and finance at a National Governing Body, I can provide advice into the strategy and financial position of the RYA ensuring a secure, progressive and inclusive operation which gives support, enjoyment and success for members whether they are just starting out or aiming for medal success in Olympics.
Away from the world of work in addition to developing and improving my sailing skills, I have a kayak which I paddle on the Thames and other local waterways and also enjoy cycling, running and open water swimming. I am a member of Keyhaven Yacht Club where I continue to hone my sailing skills and help with support boat activities. I have volunteered in grass-roots junior hockey (Spencer Hockey Club) and swimming (South London Swimming Club) for many years and hence have had direct interaction with governing and membership bodies for other sports so am able to compare and contrast the way RYA delivers with other member driven organisations.
I believe it is critical that the RYA remains relevant to all its members who should see benefit and value in a community they can contribute to and are proud to belong. I look forward to the opportunity to continue with the RYA and believe that I am well placed to make a significant contribution for the benefit of all.
