What is RYA Futures Lab?
Futures Lab is the RYA’s first youth ambassadors programme designed for 16–25-year-olds.
It’s a team of young leaders, creators, and changemakers who will shape the future of sailing and outdoor adventure.
Together, you’ll work directly with the RYA to break down barriers, from access and cost to representation and opportunity, helping to build something better.
You don’t need to be an experienced sailor to become a part of the RYA Futures Lab. You just need to be passionate about sailing, sport, or the outdoors, and want to make a difference.
Why is the Futures Lab important?
Right now, not enough young people are getting into the sport. We want to change that by putting your ideas, energy, and perspective at the centre of it all.
The RYA represents over 100,000 members, thousands of volunteers, and hundreds of training centres. But the next generation should help decide what comes next.
RYA Futures Lab gives you the space and support to make that happen. Together, we’ll explore what needs to change, building real solutions that make a difference.

Why join?
You’ll design ideas that make waves across the UK sailing community and gain the skills to lead change anywhere you go.
As part of the Futures Lab, you’ll:
- Join monthly online “labs” to share ideas and create solutions
- Help shape RYA projects, events, and youth programmes
- Take part in a national leadership academy run by Unloc, including a residential experience and practical bootcamp
- Build skills in communication, teamwork, and leadership
- Learn about equality, inclusion, and sustainability in sport
- Get free RYA membership, travel support, and professional references
- You’ll also connect with a growing likeminded network of young changemakers from across the UK.
How to Apply
Applications for RYA Futures Lab Members are open until 09 January 2026.
You can apply to become a Youth Ambassador Chair or General Member online, or by submitting a video application.
If your application is shortlisted, you’ll be asked to participate in an informal group conversation. Where you’ll meet with the other applicants and RYA Futures Lab Co-ordinators to discuss next steps and plans for the year ahead.
