Discover essential tips for protecting your boat against the elements this winter

Winter can be hard on boats, especially if areas are hit with freezing temperatures, snow, or ice. Taking some simple steps to protect your boat from damage can ensure it’s ready to get back on the water in the spring.

1. Drain and flush water systems

Water left in the engine, pipes, or tanks can freeze and expand, potentially cracking or bursting the components. To avoid costly repairs, drain all water from the engine, plumbing, bilges, and water tanks. Then, flush the system with antifreeze specifically designed for boats to ensure even the smallest droplets don’t freeze.

2. Protect your engine and fuel system

To prepare the engine, change the oil and replace the oil filter to remove moisture and contaminants that could corrode the engine’s interior over the winter. Add a fuel stabiliser to the gas tank to prevent condensation and fuel degradation, which can clog fuel injectors or carburettors. Finally, run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the treated fuel.

3. Remove and store batteries safely

Batteries can discharge quickly in cold weather. Remove all batteries from the boat, clean the terminals, and store them in a cool, dry place where they won’t freeze. Charge the batteries occasionally over the winter to maintain their health, or consider using a trickle charger to keep them topped up.

4. Invest in a quality boat cover

A durable, waterproof boat cover protects against snow, ice, and winter debris. Look for a cover that fits snugly to prevent water and moisture from seeping in, which can cause mould and mildew. You could also invest in a custom-fitted cover or a sturdy frame to support the cover, so it doesn’t sag under the weight of excessive rain or snow.

5. Check for leaks and clean thoroughly

Before storing your boat inspect it for leaks and repair any you find. A thorough cleaning of the interior and exterior helps prevent mildew, odours, and staining over the winter. Be sure to remove any food or personal items to prevent pest issues during storage.
