About Cookies

Cookies are small text files that can be used by web sites, like www.rya.org.uk to make a user's experience more efficient and to help you access our site faster and more efficiently.

When you visit a site that uses cookies for the first time, one is downloaded onto your device. When you next visit the site, your device then checks to see if it has a cookie from that website and sends the information from the cookie to the website, the website then ’knows’ that you have been there before.

When created, cookies normally don't contain any personal information. They don't scan your computer or do any kind of investigation to find out your personal information. Any personal information they might contain is a result of your own input on a website's form. When a cookie does store personal information, this information is coded in such a way that it is unreadable to any third party who happens to access your cookie folder. The only computer that can read and decode the information is the server that created the cookie in the first place.

In addition to encrypting any information stored in cookies, some websites add extra layers of security to browsers' cookie handling processes: store only anonymous but unique content on local cookies; or store personal information on the website's server and make it accessible only by matching with it the anonymous cookie stored on your computer.

Cookies enable us to identify when you are logged in to our site and the device you are using. We only use cookies that are strictly necessary to provide you with certain features and for you to move around our site. Some of our cookies are used to enhance the functionality of our website by storing your preferences, for example. We also use cookies to help us to improve the performance of our website to provide you with a better user experience.

The RYA does not sell any information collected by our cookies, nor do we disclose the information to third parties unless requested to by law.

Please read this information carefully. For further information, please visit www.allaboutcookies.org. Please be aware that declining or denying cookies may prevent you from being able to use the site to its highest capability.

Other tools and technologies

In addition to cookies, we may also use the following technologies to collect information.

Technology

Use

Web beacons and browser web storage

A web beacon is an electronic file that signals when a webpage, advertisement, video, other content, an email, or a newsletter has been viewed. Our CMS uses web beacons in conjunction with cookies to collect data that helps us better understand how visitors move from page to page within websites. Browser web storage enables websites to store data in a browser on a device. When used in "local storage" mode, it enables data to be stored across sessions (for example, so that the data is retrievable even after the browser has been closed and reopened).

Embedded URLs

We may use a tracking technique that employs embedded URLs to allow use of the Sites without cookies. Embedded URLs allow limited information to follow you as you navigate the Sites but are not associated with Personal data and are not used beyond the session.

Embedded Pixels and Similar Technologies

Our CMS and our service providers may use embedded pixel technologies for the purposes of identifying unique user visits (as opposed to aggregate hits) and for advertising purposes. In addition, embedded pixels or other technologies may be used in emails and our online display advertising to provide information on when the email or ad was opened to track marketing campaign responsiveness; information collected using these technologies may be associated with the recipient's email address.

The pixel technology used in the Sites enables the synchronization of internal unique identifiers between our CMS (AddThis) and our third-party partners to facilitate interest-based advertising. Please see the “How to Manage Cookies” section below for opt-out options.

Widgets, Buttons, and Tools

Our Sites may include widgets, which are interactive mini-programs that run on our Sites to provide specific services from another company (e.g., links to bookmarked sites), along with buttons or other tools that link to other companies’ services (e.g., a “Like” button or third-party map).

The widget, button, or tool may collect and automatically send Personal Data, such as your email address, or other information (such as your browser information or IP address) to a third party. Cookies may also be set or used by the widgets, buttons, or tools to enable them to function properly or for other purposes, which may include advertising. Information collected or used by a widget, button, or tool, including cookie settings and preferences, is governed by the privacy policy of the company that created it.

Use of third-party cookies

Some of the web beacons and cookies we use on the Sites are from third parties that help us advertise, serve content, communicate with you, and measure the impact of our Sites. Such third parties can be divided into the following categories:

Advertising

To display ads on sites across the internet. These vendors may use third-party cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to the Sites.

Analytics

To enable us to: (a) perform analyses of information on location, interests, etc., to learn about our visitors and (b) measure the performance of our website and website content.

Google Analytics Evaluates your use of our website and compiles reports on user activity.

Social media and sharing tools

Some third-party cookies enable visitors to the Sites to use social media features, like sharing and sending or recommending pages to others. Such third parties include YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Using these elements of the Sites allows these service providers to set cookies on your device and track your behaviours within their platforms. Social media and sharing tool providers may also detect your presence on the Sites if you are logged into their services.

Please note that the cookies set, and tracking carried out by these third-party providers are not under our control. For further information, please view the privacy policies of these third parties.

Managing Cookies

Information regarding changing your cookie setting is displayed in your web browser. You can delete your cookies at any time using the setting in your web browser, here you can also disable cookies, but this will probably mean that certain functions on websites may not work correctly. If you wish to restrict or even block cookies, the help function within your browser should tell you how too.  Alternatively, you may wish to visit www.aboutcookies.org, which contains comprehensive information on how to do this on a wide variety of desktop browsers.

The RYA website will work without cookies, but you will lose some features and functionality if you do decide to disable or remove certain cookies.
