Episode 4 - Historic islands
In episode 4, Dee heads into the port of Stari Grad on the island of Hvar in search of history. With the help of local expert, Binko, Dee learns more about Croatia’s UNESCO sites and how Croatian culture has been shaped by shifting civilisations.
Faced with some difficult weather conditions, Dee finds sanctuary on the popular island of Hvar. She discovers, whatever the weather, there’s plenty to explore on Croatia’s islands.
With Binko as her guide, Dee takes in the UNESCO heritage site of the Church of St John and learns about the UNESCO protected Hvar traditions like lace making, Dalmatian songs (known as clapa), and even drystone walling. Binko shares with her the story of Hvar and Croatia, talking about how its culture has been influenced by the part it played in Greek, Roman, and Christian civilisations.
Dee also returns to Vis to find out about some more recent history, discovering Vis’s military past and learning more about the 30km of bunkers that run beneath the island.
