The Aspiring Senior Instructor Academy is a new initiative designed to support, guide and inspire current RYA instructors who are thinking about progressing to Senior Instructor level.

Whether you feel unsure about the role, want to build confidence or simply need help understanding the journey, this Academy is here to help you take that next step.

What is the Aspiring Senior Instructor Academy?

The Academy aims to break down myths, boost confidence, and provide clear guidance for instructors preparing to become Senior Instructors. 

Through two online sessions delivered by experienced RYA Trainers, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of what the role involves and how to succeed. 

Session 1: The role of a Senior Instructor
Wednesday 21 January 2026 - 7pm
An overview of the Senior Instructor responsibilities, including myth-busting around the role, key competencies and expectations of the course.

Session 2: A Senior Instructor is a role model Instructor
Wednesday 28 January 2026 - 7pm
This session will explore how being a good Instructor positively impacts the ability to carry out the role of a Senior Instructor. It will help participants reflect on the qualities and behaviours that make them a strong instructor and how these attributes and experience support them in the Senior Instructor role.

Each session lasts around 45 minutes and includes opportunities for interaction and questions. 

After the second session, participants will be signposted to regional sessions offering further support. These will vary by region and are coordinated by RYA Regional Managers. 

Who’s it for?

The Aspiring Senior instructor Academy is open to all current RYA Instructors aged 18+ with one or more seasons of experience who are interested in working towards becoming a Senior Instructor.
