Events

Activity is centrally planned and approved by the organisation which has overall responsibility for decision making and safety through delegated authority to key roles and setting competency required.  

Participants choose to take part based on an assessment of their competency and the support available from the organisation. Participants are responsible for their own safety, conduct towards others and equipment. They agree to follow rules in place and instruction provided.

  • Club racing
  • Open events
  • Jointly organised class championships

Led or supervised

Activity is centrally planned and approved by the organisation which has overall responsibility for decision making and safety through delegated authority to key roles and setting competency required.  

Led activity provides a focus of and structure for learning, while supervised only provides a framework for practice or recreation.  

The organisation will set expectations of the level of competence participants will need.  

Participants make an informed choice to take part and agree to follow rules in place and instruction provided. They are responsible for their conduct towards others.

  • RYA Courses
  • Learn to sail sessions
  • Race training; Practice or recreational sessions

Collaborative

Activity is planned and organised by individuals who are jointly responsible for the safety and decision making, and agree expectations of the level of competence participants will need between them.  

Participants choose to take part based on an assessment of their own competency and are responsible for their own safety, conduct towards others and equipment. They agree to follow rules agreed by the group.  

The organisation approves the activity, may promote it and sets competencies required if any club owned equipment is used as well as expectations of conduct from all involved.

Examples 

  • Buddy sailing
  • Pottering / cruising groups 

Independent

Activity is outside any club framework or approval. 

Participants choose to take part based on an assessment of their own competency and are responsible for their own safety, conduct towards others and equipment. They are responsible checking the arrangements put in place by any other parties involved. 

The organisation will set competencies required if any club owned equipment is used. 

Examples 

  • Private coaching
  • Informal arrangements to sail
  • Advice and guidance between peers
  • Use of club equipment outside approved sessions
  • Attending others’ events
