A chance to make sailing history!

Entries are now open for expressions of interest for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

An exciting new chapter for youth sailing is on the horizon! Sailing is set to make its historic debut at the Commonwealth Youth Games, opening the door to an incredible opportunity for the next generation of sailing talent.

Taking place in Malta in late 2027, sailing will feature as one of eight sports at the Games, bringing together some of the Commonwealth’s most exciting young athletes. With preparations now underway, the countdown is on for what promises to be a landmark moment for youth sailing.

Against the stunning backdrop of Mellieha Bay, young sailors will take to the water over six action-packed days, competing in the men’s and women’s Optimist and ILCA 4 classes. With four gold medals available, the stage is set for unforgettable moments.

We caught up with the RYA’s Pathway Team, who are excited to support ambitious young sailors looking to take the next step on their journey and seize the incredible opportunity.

"The scale of this opportunity is hugely exciting. The announcement introduced a whole new aspiration for young Scottish sailors, and opportunity to showcase just what they're capable of on a whole new stage.

"We're super excited to see who wants to put their hat in the ring, and show what Scotland is capable of. Roll on 2027!"

- RYA Scotland's Head of Sport and Performance Pathways Jamie Rogers

Optimists - one of the classes entered for the event.

"The inclusion of sailing in the 2027 Youth Commonwealth Games creates an exciting new opportunity for young athletes in the pathway to test themselves, represent their country and experience the unique opportunity of competing at a multi-sport Games. With expressions of interest now open, we’re looking forward to seeing which sailors are ready to take on the challenge. It’s an exciting time for the next generation of English sailing talent!”

- RYA Youth Racing Manager, Oli Woodcock

With expressions of interest currently open, The RYA, RYA Cymru Wales, RYA Scotland and RYA Northern Ireland are inviting eligible Optimist and ILCA 4 sailors to express an interest in the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games in Malta.

The RYA has created eligibility guidance for those keen to find out more about the selection process, please read below:

When completing the form, sailors will need to identify their preferred class and event, the home country they wish to represent, how they believe they meet that country’s eligibility requirements, and their anticipated class-transition plans.

For Optimist sailors, the selection approach will be designed so that the opportunity does not encourage sailors to remain in the class longer than would otherwise be appropriate for their development.

Expressions of interest will close before 04 January 2027. Longlists are expected to be established in March 2027, with final selection planned for August.
