For almost two decades, Sandra Hartley has been the driving force behind a transformative outdoor education programme at Greenbank Primary School, Rochdale.
As headteacher, Sandra envisaged a school experience that extended far beyond the classroom – one that would empower every child, regardless of background, to explore, grow and thrive through adventure and connection with the natural world.
What began as a modest initiative has blossomed into a fully integrated outdoor curriculum that runs alongside the school day, with sailing at Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club at its core.
As she retires from her role and in recognition of her extraordinary contribution, Sandra was recently surprised with an RYA Impact Award, celebrating her dedication to the sport and championing of outdoor education.
Over the years, Sandra has overseen more than 120,000 participation days of learning outside of the classroom, alongside 7,000 days of residential experience and 1,450 adventurous experiences.
Thanks to her unwavering commitment, Greenbank has developed a sailing pathway in partnership with Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club. The school owns a fleet of Optimists and is a group member of the club, enabling 12 students at a time to progress from complete beginners to achieving their RYA Stage 3.
Every Year 3 pupil also receives an introductory sailing session, building confidence and planting the seeds of lifelong skills and a love of the water.
Sandra’s vision has not only enriched the experiences of her pupils – it has created a lasting legacy. As she retires, she leaves behind a sustainable sailing programme embedded within the school, and generations of children who have grown in confidence, resilience and joy thanks to the opportunities she advocated.
