Over 130 young sailors took to the water last weekend for the John Minnis Youth Championships, hosted at Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club. Eight fleets took part, with 11 clubs represented from Northern Ireland and 5 from the Republic of Ireland. Sailors ranged from first timers in the Regatta fleet up to high performance 29ers and ILCA 7s, testing their skills in every condition the weekend threw at them.

But this event is about more than podiums. It's about building confidence, friendship and a lifelong love of sailing.

Racing was slightly delayed due to pretty blustery conditions in Belfast Lough, but once racing was underway, everyone had a brilliant first day.

Club Cup

Ballyholme Yacht Club took the win with 65 points, followed by Strangford Lough Yacht Club in second and Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club in third. Donaghadee Sailing Club and County Antrim Yacht Club rounded out the top five.

Schools Cup

Larne Grammar School took first place, with Methodist College Belfast in second and Campbell College in third. Sullivan Upper School and St Joseph's Secondary School, Rush completed the top five.
