Ofcom review of UK maritime spectrum licenses

New proposal sets out to simplify licensing

Ofcom has launched a new consultation to review how radio communications are licensed and managed across the UK's maritime sector.

The regulator is proposing updates that would simplify certain licenses and ensure the UK keeps pace with international standards for safe and reliable marine radio use.

Their goal is to make sure the spectrum framework remains fit for purpose and supports new technologies, while protecting the integrity of vital maritime communications.

One notable proposal is the phasing out of legacy Man Overboard (MOB) Automatic Identification System (AIS) devices by 2030.

The RYA will be responding to the consultation to ensure the voice of the recreational boating community is represented before it closes in June.
