Scotland's west coast busy with top tier race action

Scotland's West Coast has been busy this past week, with two major events taking place, showcasing the breadth of talent, opportunity, and world class venues Scottish sailing has to offer. Between the UK Optimist Nationals at Largs Sailing Club, to cutting-edge foiling and windsurfing competition in Stranraer, Scotland has provided a fitting stage for some exceptional racing.

Top Optimist action at Largs

Largs Sailing Club welcomed the 2026 IOCA UK Optimist National Championships from 3 to 7 August, bringing together some of the most talented young sailors for five days of competition. Attracting an impressive 163 sailors, with 111 competing in the main fleet, alongside coached regatta fleets, the strength of the Optimist pathway was certainly on show. 

Throughout the week, competitors were tested by a wide variety of Scottish sailing conditions. From steady opening-day breezes to stronger winds and tactical tidal challenges, sailors demonstrated resilience, adaptability and skill across a demanding championship schedule. A huge well done to all sailors, including the Scottish Optimist crew who put on a stellar display, with Ruben Hernandez-Wood of Aberdeen & Stonehaven Yacht Club putting in the top Scottish performance. 

Beyond the results, the event showcased learning, progression and friendship. There was also a traditional Scottish welcome, setting the tone for a week that combined top-class racing with the warm hospitality of Largs Sailing Club and its volunteer team. 

Events of this scale rely on an enormous contribution from race officials, organisers, coaches, parents and volunteers, and the success of the championship was a testament to the dedication of everyone involved both on and off the water.

Fin and Foil continues to grow

At the same time, south-west Scotland played host to another exciting championship as the Scottish Fin & Foil Open Championships returned to Loch Ryan for a fourth year. Building on the success of previous editions, the event has continued to establish itself as one of the UK's premier gatherings for windsurfing, wingfoiling and foiling disciplines.

The championship brought together competitors across a wide range of classes, including Raceboard, iQFOiL, Techno, Open Fin, Open Foil, Open Wingfoil and X-15 Wingfoil racing, demonstrating the diversity and innovation that continue to drive growth in modern sailing.

With dedicated courses for fin, foil and wingfoil racing, alongside a popular speed challenge and pre-event training camps delivered by leading UK coaches, the event offered opportunities for sailors and riders at every stage of their development. New additions, including a dedicated Groms fleet and expanded training opportunities, further underlined the event's commitment to supporting participation and progression.

Set against the backdrop of Loch Ryan, the championship once again highlighted Scotland's ability to host world-class competition in spectacular locations while creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for competitors, volunteers and spectators alike.
