RYA NI Training Day Brings Instructors Together to Learn, Share and Develop

Instructors from across Northern Ireland came together for a day of learning, sharing and development ahead of the season.

Instructors, coaches and volunteers from across Northern Ireland came together recently at Carrickfergus Sailing Club for an RYA NI Training Day.

The focus was simple. Create space for people to learn, share experiences and build confidence ahead of the season.

Sessions throughout the day centred around practical delivery, communication and supporting sailors at every stage. It gave instructors the opportunity to step back, reflect on their approach and pick up ideas they can take straight back to their own clubs.

Why Training Like This Matters

Strong sailing experiences rely on confident instructors.

Days like this help ensure that those leading activity on the water feel supported, up to date and ready to deliver safe, enjoyable sessions.

It’s not just about ticking a box. It’s about continuing to learn, asking questions and being part of a wider network.

We caught up with Mary Martin to hear why instructor development remains such an important focus across RYA NI.

Mary shares insight into the value of creating opportunities like this and how they support both instructors and the wider sailing community (all while setting up the room for a brilliant day of learning ahead).

In Conversation: Jane Campbell Morrison, RYA Scotland

Jane Campbell Morrison joined the training day, bringing experience and perspective from RYA Scotland.

She highlights the importance of shared learning and how collaboration across regions strengthens the sailing community as a whole.

In Conversation: Wavelength Training

Wavelength Training delivered key elements of the day, focusing on practical skills and confidence in delivery.

Their session supported instructors in refining how they lead sessions and engage sailors on the water. We got a chance to speak to the team during what was an absolutely delicious lunch. Hear what they have to say below.

Looking Ahead

As the season gets underway, sessions like this play an important role in supporting clubs across Northern Ireland.

Better prepared instructors lead to stronger experiences on the water. That benefits everyone involved.
