RYA Cymru Wales proudly announces leadership update

Sarah McGovern named as Chief Operating Officer

RYA Cymru Wales is pleased to announce that Performance Manager Sarah McGovern has been appointed Chief Operating Officer for the organisation.

Sarah’s appointment marks an exciting evolution in the leadership of RYA Cymru Wales. Her new role will provide continuity and stability, building on the strong foundations established by the small, dynamic and highly valued RYA Cymru Wales team, as the organisation continues to deliver its Together on our Waters strategy to create a truly connected, inspired and inclusive sailing and boating community.

As Chief Operating Officer, Sarah will take a more hands-on role in the day-to-day running of the organisation while continuing to lead on performance matters as Performance Manager. She will be supported by Pathway & Events Officer Hatty Morsley, along with additional resources for specific projects as required.

Sarah said: “I am really excited to take on the Chief Operating Officer role. We have such an awesome agile team at RYA Cymru Wales and I’m looking forward to being able to support them further and work towards our strategic aims. I am grateful for the opportunity and support to expand my leaderships skills and develop a wider understating of the organisation, along with working closer with our stakeholders.”

Over recent years, Sarah has played a central role in driving progress across Welsh Sailing. Her leadership has supported initiatives such as Merched y Môr / Women of the Sea, the development of the Welsh Sailing youth forum, and strengthened volunteer support. She has also overseen major investment in performance sailing through Sport Wales and Welsh Government capital grants, including the introduction of a Welsh Sailing ILCA fleet and the launch of a new foiling academy.

This announcement follows recent developments at the RYA, including RYA Cymru Wales CEO James Stuart being appointed as RYA Director of Corporate Affairs. James will continue in his valued role as CEO of RYA Cymru Wales while strengthening collaboration with the wider RYA.

Sian Reynolds, Chair of RYA Cymru Wales, said: “Sarah’s appointment as Chief Operating Officer reflects her proven capability and the trust the Board places in her leadership. She has already made a significant contribution to RYA Cymru Wales, and this new role will allow her to build on that impact while continuing her excellent work in performance. We look forward to the strength and stability her expanded role will bring to the team and organisation.”

This leadership evolution positions RYA Cymru Wales strongly for the future as it continues to champion participation, performance and community across sailing and boating in Wales.
