School children across Northern Ireland have experienced sailing for the very first time as part of as part of a new initiative linked to the RYA OnBoard programme.
The idea behind the programme is to introduce school children to the world of sailing in a fun, safe, and accessible way.
RYA Northern Ireland have been supporting clubs and schools and so far, there have been successful taster days run with pupils from Killinchy Primary School, Larne and Inver Primary School, St. Mary’s Primary School, Cushendall, Glenann Primary School, Cushendall, St. Patrick’s Primary School, Glenariff (Waterfoot) and St. Ciaran’s Primary School, Cushendun.
Clubs have been supported in running these taster days because of RYA Northern Ireland ‘Active Clubs’ funding and this is opening up the sport if sailing to new people.
Although the initiative is still in its infancy, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. St. Ciaran’s Primary School’s Principal said: “Thank you to the instructors for a fantastic morning! The children loved it and I enjoyed being out on the boat!”
On top of this, P6 teacher at Killinchy Primary School, Claire McBride said: “After today I would be very keen to do it again! There were children here today who had never been on a boat before and that’s such a special thing to let them have that opportunity.”

RYA Northern Ireland, Development Officer, Jessica Penney, said: “We hope the children gain a real sense of achievement and pride. For many, it’s their first time on a boat, so building the courage to try something new is a big win.
“It’s about giving them the chance to try something completely new, often for the first time, and to experience the excitement of being on the water. Beyond sailing itself, the programme encourages confidence, teamwork, and a sense of adventure, all while promoting physical activity and a connection to the outdoors.
“We also want them to feel inspired. To see that sailing can be accessible and something they can all be a part of at their local club. Most of all, we hope they had fun, learn new skills, and create great memories.
“Our goal is to grow the programme so more schools, especially those who might not usually have access to activities like sailing, can get involved. We’re working on creating and developing partnerships with schools and sailing clubs and centres to make these types of days more accessible. By offering taster days alongside follow-up opportunities, we hope we can offer exciting opportunities for school children across NI.”
